GH Improves Its Lifting Solutions In Collaboration With

GH has recently launched the newGHB11 hoist, in close collaborationwith Schneider Electric. Equipped withSchneider Electric’s new Altivar 32series of speed inverters, this custom-developed machine delivers excellentperformance.

GH, an industrial crane manufacturerwith more than 50 years’ experienceand a strong global presence, withover 100,000 units manufacturedand distributed worldwide, equipsits machines with commercialcomponents as a strategic businessapproach. This is a differentiatingfactor, as it makes spare parts quicklyand easily available to customers allover the world.

In the early 1990s, when the companybegan its international expansion, itembarked on a successful technologypartnership with Schneider Electricas the supplier of most of the electriccomponents for its end products, acknowledging the value of its quality, availability, brand image, serviceand global presence. Some recentexamples of the benefits of thispartnership include safety systemimprovements such as the anti-swingor load limiting systems and solutionsfor optimising working times. Thecollaboration with Schneider Electrichas provided and continues to provideadded value in this area, developingand delivering solutions to meetcustomer needs.

GH’s main concern is and has alwaysbeen to improve its manufacturingquality, and this has made it apioneer in the standardised use offrequency inverters for hoist andcrane movement. This technologyadvance has enabled GH Cranes toimprove features such as movementspeed and precision control, smoothcrane acceleration and braking, prevention of hazardous rockingand motor protection systems, prolonging their working life andthat of their mechanisms. All thismeans advantages for customers asregards safety, productivity and lowermaintenance costs.
In keeping with this desire to improveits products and enhance the featuresprovided to customers, GH askedschneider Electric to develop a motorcontrol frequency inverter for liftingmovement, for standard inclusion onits new range of hoists.
The new converter has now beenlaunched and provides GH’s customerswith numerous advantages for liftingmovement:
  • Better speed and movement precisioncontrol
  • Smoother start-up and braking
  • Lower starting current
  • Longer service life of the differentelectrical and mechanical componentsand the motor, brake and gears
  • No brake wear, as the brakes workelectrically via the frequency converterand the service brake is subsequentlyapplied
  • Higher productivity, doubling thespeed achieved off-load and with loadsbelow 25% rated capacity
  • Easier synchronisation for lifting attwo different speeds

The frequency inverter reducesstarting peaks, which means lessvoltage drops and therefore higherelectric line efficiency. Braking iselectric with a deceleration ramp andthe mechanical brake is subsequentlyapplied, which not only reduces loadswing but also practically eliminatesbrake pad wear, as in practice themechanical braking system is onlyused as a parking and safety brake. Aclosed loop encoder is incorporatedat this stage for low-speed lifting, preventing the load from shifting.

The standard inclusion of a speedinverter for lifting movement is aninnovative solution that has beenwell-accepted on the market, andover 1000 units of this new hoist withthe schneider Electric Altivar 32device have been manufactured todate.

The speed inverter’s main featuresare its integrated safety functions, incompliance with current standards,a highly compact size (just 45 mm),programming versatility, ease ofconfiguration and an integratedencoder card, enabling total processcontrol.

To add to all these improvementsand advantages, Schneider Electric’scollaboration with GH is continuingand the two firms are currentlydeveloping competitive crane safetysystems such as the new anti-swingand crane self-testing systems andremote maintenance. The partnersthus continue to jointly innovate witha view to creating new solutionsto make this lifting and loadingequipment manufacturer morecompetitive on a world level.
